General
Audition today for the 2008 season
All auditions for NYCA are recorded auditions. You should submit a recording of your voice, on a CD, MiniDisk or cassette, to the NYCA season coordinator. The recording does not need to be "professional" quality, but it does need to show clearly the character of your voice. You also need to arrange for a reference from a choir director, voice teacher, or other suitable person.
Applications must be received by 30 April 2008.
If circumstances do not allow you to record your audition, please contact us to make alternative arrangements. All applications received will be acknowledged by e-mail.
Details
- Download and print an application form
- Complete the form and make a photocopy.
- Send one copy to NYCA with your audition recording (see below)
- Give the second copy - including the instructions page - to your referee. Your referee should send their assessment of your choral abilities directly to the season coordinator.
- If you haven't already done so, join the "potential-NYCAns" mailing list to ensure you receive all the information about NYCA auditions - click on "mailing list" above to sign up.
- IMPORTANT: All auditions that NYCA receives will be acknowledged. If you have not received confirmation of receipt of your audition within 10 days of sending it to us, please contact audition@nyca.org.au.
Recording
Please record the following on a CD, MiniDisk or cassette. Audio files received by e-mail will not be accepted.
- Identification: Clearly identify yourself by stating your name, address and vocal part (e.g. "soprano 1", "tenor 2").
- Unaccompanied Song: Sing an unaccompanied song of your choice, clearly identifying the name of the song, composer and the key in which you will sing it. Choose a song that shows your voice in a good light, rather than one which is too complex to allow you to sing at your best.
- Range: Sing on a syllable of your choice from the middle of your range to the effective top of your range, and then from the middle of your range to the effective bottom of your range. Verbally identify the notes that form the effective extremes of your range (i.e. the highest and lowest notes just sung). You should sing at approximately mm 60 (i.e. about one note per second).
- Set Task: Sing the excerpt below. It is deliberately designed to be fairly difficult, so do not be discouraged if you have to practise it quite a bit first. You should aim for accurate rhythm and intonation.
Note: the excerpts are also printed on the application form.
